Dubai Airport holds the top spot as the busiest airport in the world with high passenger traffic in 2021

Dubai International Airport, the busiest airport in the world for international travel, handled 29.1 million passengers in 2021, an increase of 12.7% over the previous year. On Tuesday, Dubai State Airports said the numbers were buoyed by strong performance in the fourth quarter, which accounted for more than a third of last year's total traffic. The increase in traffic, which even exceeds Dubai airports' expectations of 28 million passengers, indicates people's enthusiasm to travel despite the continuing pandemic. The airport is the main hub of Emirates Airlines and handles flights operated by 84 airlines to 198 international destinations. December was the busiest month for traffic, with the airport handling 4.5 million passengers to and from Dubai. During the fourth quarter, quarterly passenger traffic surpassed ten million for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The movement through the airport has received support from Dubai's return to open its doors to tourists in July 2020 and in light of the imposition of relatively light health restrictions that have made Dubai a destination for tourists. Dubai will host the 2020 World Expo, which started in October and ends next month. However, demand is still very low compared to the airport's passenger traffic in 2019, which amounted to 86.4 million. The administration expects around 60 million passengers to pass through the airport this year.
